The Citadel on the Mesa
Founded before 3000 BC, Amedi has watched over the road between Mesopotamia and the mountains for five thousand years. Perched 3,900 feet above the plains of Duhok on a single flat-topped mesa, it was the seat of the Bahdinan emirate, home to the Great Mosque, a synagogue and a tomb attributed to Ezekiel - conquered by Assyrians, Medes, Parthians and Romans, and never abandoned.
